"A fashion accessory is an item used to contribute, in a secondary manner, to the wearer's outfit, often used to complete an outfit and chosen to specifically complement the wearer's look".
I like that word 'contribute' because a fashion accessory should contribute' to the whole look, helping to create an outfit, expressing your personality and sense of style.
Basically accessories can be broken down into two areas - those that are worn and those that are carried. So we wear shoes, boots, hats, belts, scarves, shawls, stockings, tights, ties, gloves, jewelry, a watch etc. but we carry bags, glasses, sunglasses, briefcase, luggage, pens, wallet and an umbrella.
You can take an ultra simple outfit in neutral colors and go with your instinctive choice for accessories or you can choose to paint a picture of the person you would like to be!
Because the accessories you choose to wear (or carry) say a lot about you!
From the long list of items above you can understand how easy it would be to overload if you were an accessories fan!
Coco Chanel is reported to have said 'Before leaving the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off'.
Think you've got nothing to wear? If your wardrobe looks boring a few key accessories can transform simple into stylish.
Accessories will draw the eye so choose just a few to accent an outfit or highlight the feature you want to present. Keep it simple when surrounding your face otherwise you will be lost in the 'jungle'.
Whether you want to style up, style down or go completely casual, you can dictate the tone with your choice of add-ons - just keep them to the same level of 'dressiness'.
Whatever accessories you add to an outfit should be in proportion to your body frame. Avoid too much bulk if you have a small frame but a larger lady will look bigger still if her accessories are tiny.
