Red has a way of turning heads - not because it
has to be loud but because it quietly signals energy, confidence and a touch
of romance. And early February is a perfect time to play with it; National Wear
Red Day (Feb 6th) spotlights women’s heart health and Galentine’s Day (Feb
13th) is a lovely excuse to celebrate friendship.
But the real point is that you don’t have to save red for Christmas or Valentine’s Day. Red can be
part of your everyday wardrobe; elegant, stylish and completely wearable at any
age!
If you’ve avoided red because it feels 'too
much' you’re not alone. Many women worry it will look bright, showy or like
they’re trying too hard. The good news is that everyone can find a red that
works. The secret is choosing the right undertone then wearing it in simple,
flattering ways like lipstick, a scarf, or a top.
Most of us have a natural undertone that leans
either warm or cool. When you wear colors that match your undertone everything
looks more harmonious; your skin looks clearer, your eyes look brighter and you
feel more like YOU!
Reds with a Warm undertone lean towards golden/yellow shades; while Reds with a Cool undertone lean pink/blue. Skin tones of the ladies below echo this.
Red is one of the three primary colors (red,
yellow, blue). As soon as you influence red with a touch of yellow it becomes
warmer. Add a touch of blue and it becomes cooler. That’s why there are so
many reds and why one red can look fabulous while another feels totally wrong.
If you’re unsure of
your undertone, start by noticing which reds you already like to wear. Do you look fresher in tomato brick tones, it's likely you lean Warm. If you glow in cherry or cranberry, you likely lean towards Cool. (A scarf is a great test for this - more
on that below.)
1) A RED LIP (for instant polish!)
For maximum impact, minimal effort, start with lipstick. A red lip can feel like 'soft power' - confident, feminine and timeless especially when the rest of your look is simple. A red lip does not have to be scarlet!

2) A RED SCARF (the most forgiving)
A scarf is one of the easiest ways to wear red after 50 because it sits close to your face. It's right where color makes the biggest difference without committing to a full outfit.
Bonus: Scarves quickly show whether a red is right for you. If it brightens you it’s a winner. If it makes you look tired or sallow try a different variation of red Warm v Cool or Light v Deep.

3) A RED TOP (Confident and Chic)
A red top can be surprisingly easy if you treat it like a 'statement neutral'. Let the red do the work and keep everything else simple.
Easy outfit formulas:
If red feels too strong near your face, choose a softer or deeper red, or go for a neckline that gives you space (V-neck, scoop, or an open collar). You can also add a small buffer like a necklace or a scarf tie so the red doesn’t feel so 'in your face'.

Red can also be light or deep and this connects beautifully to the Seasonal palettes of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
Add white and red becomes softer and lighter (strawberry, watermelon, rose reds), add gray or black and red becomes deep and rich (burgundy, garnet, oxblood).
But don’t
get hung up on finding one perfect red you'll find a range that suits you, so give yourself permission to experiment.
The Takeaway: Red isn’t 'too young' or 'too loud'. The right red simply looks like you - confident, elegant, and alive. So this week, instead of asking “Can I pull off red?” try asking ourself “Which red makes me look my best?”
